Summary

The latest novel in the international bestselling Before the Coffee Gets Cold Series, following four new customers in a little Tokyo café where customers can travel back in time。

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years。 But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time。

From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold and Tales from the Cafe comes another story of four new customers, each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Café Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer。 Among some familiar faces from Kawaguchi's previous novels, readers will also be introduced to a daughter, a comedian, a sister, and a lover, each with something they wish they had said differently。

With his signature heartwarming characters and immersive storytelling, Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

This one's as enjoyable as the first two books in the series!(view spoiler)[Oh it looks like those cafes are like some kind of a portal between layers of time。 I was surprised that Tokyo's cafe isn't the only one with time-travel possibility。 Besides the ones situated in Japan, it seems that such a cafe is there somewhere in America as well。。。 (hide spoiler)]5 stars to "The Daughter", the first story out of the four!Dreamworlds by Lily (Sugarmints Artwork)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> This one's as enjoyable as the first two books in the series!(view spoiler)[Oh it looks like those cafes are like some kind of a portal between layers of time。 I was surprised that Tokyo's cafe isn't the only one with time-travel possibility。 Besides the ones situated in Japan, it seems that such a cafe is there somewhere in America as well。。。 (hide spoiler)]5 stars to "The Daughter", the first story out of the four!Dreamworlds by Lily (Sugarmints Artwork)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

Cafe Donna Donna, Kindred to Tokita Family's Cafe Funiculi Funicula In the last book of the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, Kawaguchi reillustrates the century-old Cafe Funiculi Funicula by bringing the traditional coffee-pouring ceremonies in Hakodate。 Fast forward seven years after, four distinctive individuals entered the cafe to voyage on the notable chair。 If the world were to end tomorrow, which action do you take? The formulation of the plot was intricate, but resurfacing subtly。 The author offered new dilemmas in a newer and brighter setting。 The character development of the characters has been refreshing and consistently firm, truer to their values。 Their values were put to test as they were challenged by the plight of time。 Cliche as it sounds, humans complain about what we think we hold is not in our hands; time。 The author elucidated that people who lost the will to live along with the people that passed in their lives。 Sometimes, we were taken aback by predestined events, losing them before we know it。 One by one, the characters realize there is so much more to see and look forward to in their future。 With a bittersweet resolve, Toshikazu Kawaguchi wove our heartstrings for the last time in this series。I'm giving this book a 4。5 stars for everything this book is。 。。。more

I like the premise and some of the messages around grief in this, but: 1) How fucking high is the death rate in this small circle of people?!2) I dont really understand why the book repeats itself so much - it’s like bingeing a TV series that’s forcing you to watch the ‘last time on…’ every episode。 3) the writing was a bit clunky but I’m not sure if that’s a translation issue? I heard good things about this series but maybe the hype made me more disappointed… the hardback cover is gorgeous tho

A bittersweet autumn read; the interactions in this book might be my favourite of all the cafe tales。🍂

This book felt a little unnecessary。 Still an enjoyable read, but the storylines were very similar to the previous books and the characters weren't really expanded upon。 It looks like there'll be a fourth book and that seems like overkill to me。 This book felt a little unnecessary。 Still an enjoyable read, but the storylines were very similar to the previous books and the characters weren't really expanded upon。 It looks like there'll be a fourth book and that seems like overkill to me。 。。。more

Another beautiful instalment, extending the world of the Funiculi Funicula - with both new and familiar faces exploring the question: What would you say if you could revisit a person in a specific moment? I loved the original story, and while this didn't quite speak to me as much, it still made me laugh, cry and ponder big existential questions - particularly around familial relationships, loss and grief。 I would definitely recommend to those entranced by magical-realism, time-slips or Japanese Another beautiful instalment, extending the world of the Funiculi Funicula - with both new and familiar faces exploring the question: What would you say if you could revisit a person in a specific moment? 3。5Still enjoyed the atmosphere and the characters a lot (still one of the most pleasant reading experiences) but the writing was way more obvious and repetitive than the other books。

Adored the first book in the series。 What a brilliant idea for a book but not sure if it needed to be a series。 These books are thought-provoking and hopefully will make you cherish your loved ones and the precious time we are give with them。 I sometimes got confused with who is who so having a notebook nearby is handy。 A big thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for this ARC。

Did I know this book would break me like the first two? Absolutely。 Will I read the fourth when it’s out? You betcha!

Four scenarios at Cafe Donna Donna which offers its customers the extraordinary experience of traveling through time with condition that the patrons could not do anything that change the future。 About dealing with the past, death, acceptance and moving on。

This has mostly the same formula as the first two books and still made me emotional and cry in public。 These books are good, they’re pretty simple but they ask a lot of questions about humanity and life。

“Before Your Memory Fades” by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is painfully beautiful。 The first two books in the series, “Before the Coffee Gets Cold”, and “Tales from the Cafe” were quietly thought-provoking and calming。 This third one is the same, except I felt more longing and pain。The premise doesn’t change - “If you could go back, who do you want to meet?” We follow four cafe customers who travel through time: a daughter who resents her parents for leaving her orphaned, a comedian who pines for the lov “Before Your Memory Fades” by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is painfully beautiful。 The first two books in the series, “Before the Coffee Gets Cold”, and “Tales from the Cafe” were quietly thought-provoking and calming。 This third one is the same, except I felt more longing and pain。The premise doesn’t change - “If you could go back, who do you want to meet?” We follow four cafe customers who travel through time: a daughter who resents her parents for leaving her orphaned, a comedian who pines for the love of his life and their dreams, a sister consumed by her sibling’s death, and a young man who realizes his love for an old friend。The pattern is the same。 A customer walks into the cafe, learns the rules, we get a bit of background on their life, then they go time travel。 There were moments when I thought - okay, this is predictable。 But then a plot twist always comes and then I’m crying and thinking to myself, “Okay… let me take a breath first。” This book left me wrecked tbh。🥹The pain of what is and all left unsaid is more intense in this 3rd book。 But while it is heart-wrenching, it also is heartwarming。 Where there are honest moments of longing and loss, there are also moments of love and hope especially in the characters of Kazu and Sachi。There is a “book within a book” approach here that I won’t give details about because it may be a spoiler, but what I can say is that it was very effective in tying all four journeys together, and in making me, the reader, feel I was part of that group in Cafe Donna Donna。Do read “Before Your Memory Fades。” It’s a very good read that stays with you。 It is also a great reminder to think about the longings we have, what makes us put them on hold, and what we should do about them before our memory fades。 。。。more

4。5⭐️ wow this book! I loved this one more than the 2 previous books in the series。 I felt like the author/translator feel a lot more confident in their writing and story telling in this one。 I have never cried so hard in a book than in the first story! And the last story I was so shocked。 I loved the new setting and thought it spiced things up a bit。 Also loved the scenery through describing the different changing seasons。 Would highly recommend continuing the before the coffee gets cold series 4。5⭐️ wow this book!
